Turkey Vulture
Cathartes aura
Found through most of the Americas, the Turkey Vulture can soar and glide effortlessly over wide ranging native habitat, searching for food. Carrion is often found using their specially developed sense of smell.
Black Vulture
Coragyps atratus
An extremely numerous bird found in Central and South America. Often found living alongside man, scavenging on rubbish dumps and at food markets. Our own Black Vulture, Dallas, demonstrates this in a humerous way during our displays.
Palm Nut Vulture
Gypohierax angolensis
Found in Central African forest, woodland and mangroves, where palm nuts are readily available. They are the only Bird of Prey capable of living an entirely vegetarian lifestyle. In 2021, our pair of palm nut vultures successfully raised a chick called Louie.
African White-Backed Vulture
Gyps africanus
These are a CRITICALLY ENDANGERED species found in rapidly declining numbers through the grasslands of Africa. We can keep a close eye on our pairs nesting activity on CCTV.
Ruppell's Vulture
Gyps rueppellii
Rosie and Jimmy have quite a fanbase from thier days flying in our displays. Due to the species being CRITICALLY ENDANGERED, we now hope the pair will settle down and breed, securing the future of the Ruppell's Vulture.
Hooded Vulture
Necrosyrtes monachus
Once common through Africa’s grasslands or living alongside man, this scavenger has decreased rapidly in numbers and is now CRITICALLY ENDANGERED. Our breeding pair were the first to successfully breed in a zoo in this country and have since raised 5 chicks.
